Seven Simple Steps towards a healthy James River

1. Join JRA and strengthen the voice of the James.
The mission of the James River Association is to be guardian of the James River. JRA provides a voice for the river and takes action to promote conservation and responsible stewardship of its natural resources. Become a Member

2. Know what’s in your runoff.
Pollution from stormwater runoff is the #1 health threat to our waterways. Every time it rains, pollution washes off your property and flows towards the James River. Find out how much pollution you contribute by entering a few simple facts about your home into the Runoff Calculator Planting

3. Conserve energy.
One-third of damaging nitrogen pollution going to the Chesapeake Bay is from air pollution such as car emissions and power plants. Conserving energy saves money, cleans our water and clears our air. Conserve Energy

4. Plant trees.
When it comes to rivers, fish grow on trees! Planting native trees and plants near streams and in erosion-prone areas helps keep sediment out of the river while conserving soil and creating new wildlife habitat. Plant Trees

5. Volunteer for the environment.
Whether it be tree planting, trash cleanup, or a community education event, volunteering your time not only directly helps the river but also demonstrates your commitment to clean water to friends and neighbors. Volunteer

6. Communicate with your representatives.
Elected officials need to hear that having clean drinking water, swimmable rivers and fishable streams is important to you. Know who represents you and how you can make your voice heard. Find Your Rep

7. Take a child to the river.
Early experiences in nature inspire kids to understand, treasure and preserve the earth . Help create the next generation of James River guardians by taking every opportunity to Share the River.
